At the age of 24 Betsy had her own upholstery business in the colonial city of Philadelphia. During the American Revolution she played a key role by constructing uniforms, tents and flags for the Continental Army. She was approached by General Washington in 1776 to create a new flag and she sealed the deal on her page in the American history books. Rumor has it that she persuaded Washington to go with the five-pointed star instead of the six-pointed he originally asked for because it was easier to sew.
